There are coyotes who have moved into the city here and are sometimes attacking small dogs. You've captured the feeling well. I imagine they are in your area, too!
Yes, Linda my small dog has had several close encounters with coyotes...once dangling from the coyotes mouth! Scary! We live near a desert wash where the coyote are prolific and aggressive.
