Their
orange beaks
- a striking contrast
to their white and gray feathers -
open wide
to let out
shrieks
and
cries,
shrill
and
piercing,
that echo
through
the parking lot
miles and miles
from the sea.
These seagulls
scavenge
in
the desert.

I always loved looking for the red spot on the side of the beak, signaling a juvenile.
