You're a Long Way From the Sea, Gulls!

orange beaks
- a striking contrast
to their white and gray feathers -
open wide
to let out
 that echo
the parking lot
miles and miles
from the sea.

These seagulls
the desert.

Growing Me

Up my bottom my leotard crawls,
And my tu-tu has gotten too small -
Mom says I'm growing like a weed.

Do I need to get a three-three
To fit the bigger sized me-me?
I don't care - dancing is all I need.

High Pitched Happiness

Puppy is near
With perked up ears
Looking cute as can be.

My very own voice
As if it has no choice
Climbs an octave higher than it should be.

"I wuv-wuv-wuv you, my Poochy-woo!
My puppy makes me oh so happy, its true.

Sometimes I post late
I know it's not great
But our internet died
Better late than never...*sigh*

Twinkle Dinkle Fairies

Twinkle Dinkle
Fairies fly

Twinkle Dinkle
Way up high

Twinkle Dinkle
Fairies play

Twinkle Dinkle
All night and day

Twinkle Dinkle
Fairy is caught

Twinkle Dinkle
She fought a lot

Twinkle Dinkle
Fairies cried

Twinkle Dinkle
Fairy died

Twinkle Dinkle
Fairies mourn

Twinkle Dinkle
A new fairy is born

Off The Grid

Our internet connection went out
Mom let out a frustrated shout
Now that we are "off the grid"
Mom's reminded of being a kid
Her childhood was boring no doubt

A Conversation with a Teenager...Between Rooms

Teenager: Mom, where...mumble...mumble...mumble.

Mom: What?

TA: I just said where are...mumble...mumble...mumble.

M:  Honey, I can't HEAR you.  Please come -

TA: Gosh Mom! You don't have to yell!  I SAID where are my mumble...mumble!

M: HERE!!!

A minute or two passes...

M: Finally!  What do you need?

TA: Where are my sunglasses?  I can't find them.

M: On top of your head.

TA:  Oh.

M: You're welcome.

Sleeping Foot-y

I sit
on my foot
at the kitchen table
while I do my homework.
After a while,
I shift
in my seat
trying to get my bottom
 into a more
I can't.
So I slide my foot
out from under
my rump.
At first
I have no feeling
in my foot.
I jiggle,
tap it.
Then suddenly
pins and needles
My every movement
I hold my breath
the stabbing passes
my foot
feels like my foot
Note to self...don't sit on foot.

Limerick Limerick

When writing a limerick
There seems to be a trick
To pacing each rhyme
So as to keep perfect time -
This poetry form's a kick!

Princess Fatty Pants

It's sweltering hot outside,
But super cool within.
Kitty lies around the house
And waits for an unattended tin.

Lounging in the cool AC
Has caused Kitty to grow more fur -
With her extra wide girth
She has a really loud purr.

Kitty has really gotten huge -
She sometimes groans and pants.
I think I'll change her name
To Princess Fatty Pants.

Full Fridge

Mom went grocery shopping
And loaded up on food.
Now that the fridge is full
I'm in a terrific mood.

Washing Machine Woes

My stuffed Pup
Is losing his fluff -
He spends too much time in the washing machine.

He's got a splotch of grape jelly
On fur that's already smelly -
A whir through the wash cycle will leave him clean.

When he's finally spic and span,
I have a plan -
Avoid the washer by keeping Pup pristine.

Hurry Up and Wait

Wake up!

Eat breakfast!

Get dressed!
Pick up the pace!

"Got 'em"
Go, go, go!

Now I stand, stand, stand at the bus stop by the gate.

Why did I have to hurry, hurry, hurry up to wait?

August Holiday

Which holiday is celebrated
In the month of August?
Not Halloween or Easter.
Kids haven't the foggiest.

But parents know
There is one liberating day
When the lazy days of summer end -
It's Back to School Day!

The Party is Over

The little girl guests have all left -
From their squealing I may be deaf.

The generous gifts have been unwrapped -
The dog's manic energy is finally zapped.

The puppy-shaped birthday cake has been eaten-
The entire house has been neatened.

The thank you notes are still left to write -
But for now, the party is over...goodnight.

Dad has beans for breakfast,
And beans for lunch.
He has beans for dinner -
Pop - Munch - Munch!

Dad is flatulent -
He really lets them rip.
He is always cutting them -
Womp - Poof - Pip!

Buckle Down

I climb in my booster seat
All ready to go.
When Dad says, "Buckle up!"
I must say, "No."

Dad asks, "Why?"
I answer, "But it's down."
Dad doesn't understand -
He just frowns.

I point to my seatbelt
And the place where it clicks.
"You should say, 'Buckle down!', Daddy,"
I say with a *click*.

Jake the Snake

Jake the snake slithers
Through the dense grass.
Jake the snake is spied
By Mr. Hawk flying past.

Jake the snake no longer slithers
Or flicks his tongue fast.
Jake the snake is gone -
Mr. Hawk's breakfast.

Coastal Hair

Usually my locks rock -
Smooth, straight and sleek.
But after time spent at the beach,
Looking in the mirror made me shriek.

My hair went wild -
Frizzy, fuzzy and curly.
I've never seen my hair
Looking quite so unruly.

I really tried to embrace
My new wild hair style.
As my hair went coastal,
I did my best to smile.

Styling Mo

Exactly eight years ago today
Our Maureen was born - Hooray!

Combine her sparkling eyes with her toothy smile,
Add her goofy giggle and you've got  Mo's unique style.

Pelican Fishing

Brown Pelicans
through the salty air.

flap their wings
in intervals
their place
in the perfect
they hug
the contours
the jagged

the lead Pelican
they have arrived,
they have found the perfect spot

The rest of the
Brown Pelicans
from a glide
a controlled dive
plunging themselves
the churning
blue-green ocean
a smackerel of mackerel.

I start with two slices of bread, bread, bread.
I schmear on peanut butter spread, spread, spread.
I cut bananas then mash, mash, mash.
I put it all together and smash, smash, smash.

Lost Pet

My eyes are leaking.
My voice is squeaking.
I am so upset -
I lost my pet!

He's brown and round,
And enjoys the ground.
He's the best pet on the block -
I really miss my pet rock, Brock!

Puppy Therapy

When I am sad
Puppy licks my tears.

When I am mad
Puppy steers clear.

When I am excited
Puppy jumps for joy beside me.

When I am embarrassed
Puppy helps to hide me.

No matter my emotion
My puppy is there with me.

I get through life
With daily puppy therapy.

Changing Definitions of Sleep

Infants sometimes sleep and sometimes not.
Toddlers resist sleep a lot.

Kids, their bedtime they try to delay.
Teenagers stay up late to play.

College students' sleep patterns mimic the teens.
Adults + not enough sleep = lots of caffeine.

Radio Roulette

Dad flips through the radio stations
On the car stereo to stay awake.
I don't mind the music he picks so much,
It is his singing that is hard to take.
